Known as “The Father of Modern Chess” and “The Stormy Petrel of the Chess World,” Aron Nimzovich (1886–1935), transformed his greatest performance into a brilliantly eccentric and entertaining book. In this account of his victory at the 1929 Carlsbad Tournament, Nimzovich offers a captivating retrospective of his triumph over some of the best of his contemporaries: Capablanca, Spielmann, Maroczy, Rubinstein, Marshall, Euwe, Bogolyubov, Tartakower, Sämisch, and ten others. A tart analysis of Carlsbad’s 30 best games includes the author’s tense duel with Capablanca (drawn), and the brilliancy prize game between Sämisch and Grünfeld.

Known as Wei Ch'i in China, where it originated 4,000 years ago, the territorial board game of Go is enjoyed today by millions of people the world over. Its rules are simple, but it bears endless possibilities for complex strategic maneuvers--in fact, it's reputed to be beyond the capacity of computers! Manuals for Go are hard to come by; this introduction initiates newcomers and also helps experienced players to hone their skills. "Go is for everyone," notes the author. "Judgment and experience are at least as important in Go as mental agility, and young and old are equally represented at even the highest and most strenuous levels of the game." The fourth book of the series is devoted to opening schemes, which arise
after the moves 1.e4 d6, or 1.e4 g6. These systems have proved their right of
existence, despite the numerous attempts to refute them once and for all. The
positions are so diverse strategically and so rich tactically that they deserve
a separate volume. Black avoids early clashes and narrows his “sphere of
influence” to only three ranks. However his harmonious development enables him
to attack often White’s powerful centre successfully.
The 14th World Champion Khalifman recommends against the majority of the flank
systems schemes with f2-f4 which provide additional control over the centre. He
included in this fundamental work plenty of new and original analyses which
surely will cause Black a lot of trouble!

Among the first books ever published was the 1474 translation of the Game
and Playe of the Chesse. Over the next 400 years, significant chess books
would appear, but the overwhelming number of titles on the subject appeared in
the 20th century and continue unabated. By 2003, over 35,000 volumes on chess in
a variety of languages had been published, with approximately 14,000 English
language works published from 1960 onward.
For the librarian, collector, or chess enthusiast, the immediate task comes in
finding which of these many volumes are worthwhile. This work provides an
objective and informative look at some of the best chess books published in the
period 1901 through 2000—and gives numerous examples of the games, with diagrams
that appear in them. Inclusion criteria were popularity, longevity, critical
acclaim, influence, definitiveness, historical importance, authorship and
reputation. All were published in English (or use figurine notation). Each entry
includes bibliographic details followed by a description of the book, with
information on the author or authors, why the book is important, and background
information on the publication.

YB/75:Readers from all over the world join in discussions of previous surveys.
Both (grand)masters and club players shed their light on new opening
developments and search for the truth together. With contributions by Ruslan
Scherbakov and an afterthought by Viktor Kortchnoi, who solves an intriguing
riddle around a 1963 game against Matanovic!
Sosonko's Corner
YB/75:In this extended column, Genna Sosonko provides us with a bird’s eye view
of the enormous impact that Garry Kasparov has had on opening theory. From his
younger years, through his famous World Championship matches with Karpov, right
to his last novelties in Linares 2005. Kasparov’s theoretical approach was
revolutionary. He used the computer but did not overestimate its abilities. The
man from Baku could beat all his rivals with his home preparation, which was an
extraordinary broad mixture of modern, ancient and half-forgotten opening lines.
Kasparov has stopped playing chess, but his work could keep top grandmasters,
who cannot sit still for one week as it is, busy for years. And like many of his
colleagues, Sosonko doesn’t rule out a comeback…
Book Review
YB/75:Supply and demand has motivated proficient writer Stefan
Kindermann to write his ‘The Spanish Exchange Variation’ in English instead of
his mother tongue, as Glenn Flear explains. Admiring its clarity, Flear regrets
that this book is too thin! In Konstantin Sakaev and Semko Semkov’s profound
‘Latest Trends in the Semi-Slav: ANTI-MERAN’, Flear has spotted some amazing
insights. And he finds Gary Lane’s ‘Ideas Behind Modern Chess Openings: Black’
more relevant than Lane’s version for White.
Who could better review ‘Play the Sicilian Dragon’ by Edward Dearing than our
guest author Sergey Tiviakov? Read his expert opinion, but perhaps you should
read the book first!

In the training questions, the new function Multiple Choice also allows questions to be set about the evaluation of positions, or for example what chance is there of an attack on the king. Possible answers are always suggested and the training is done by clicking on what you consider to be the correct solution. But things do not have to be simple… The author has provided 555 game fragments with training questions and divided the material into six chapters:
